We wish to thank the Twitter community for supporting last week’s BOOKS ARE GREAT GIFTS #bagg auction. We raised $1420 in donations to our auction beneficiary, Reader To Reader, an organization to places books in school libraries all over the country.
The auction began on Friday, December 17, just after 5 p.m. ET and went on until the last book was sold at 2 a.m. Saturday morning. Bidding was fierce on several items, with authors throwing in some extra, like a literary lap dance from Lauren Baratz-Logsted; a rooster from Susan Orlean; Diamond Ruby baseball card and ball cap from Joe Wallace, and Amy (A.S. King) King promising a personal appearance at the indie bookstore nearest the winner of her book.
Although he was long asleep by the time the grand prize package hit the block at 1:30 a.m., Luis Alberto Urrea had promised an additional perk to his already generous donation of Mr. Mendoza’s paintbrush, Into the Beautiful North, and The Hummingbird’s Daughter. Urrea’s package closed with a winning bid of $175 and included a signed pre-publication manuscript of the sequel to his critically acclaimed The Hummingbird’s Daughter.
Author Rebecca Skloot noticed the #bagg action and stepped in to offer a signed copy of her award-winning biography, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.
If you won an auction item, you’ll be notified by email on how to submit your donation to Reader To Reader. If you didn’t win an auction item and would still like to make a donation, go to the Reader To Reader donation page and type in #bagg donation in the comments section of the submission form.
Thanks again to everyone—authors who donated books, readers who bid on them, and the #litchat and Twitter communities who RT’d and passed word of the auction. Happy holidays to all and may 2011 be robust year for publishing.
